Sure the Rincón de la Vieja National Park is mainly known for its namesake active volcano. However, this important national park measures over 34,000 acres and houses two volcanoes, 32 streams and a highly bio diverse ecosystem.
What kinds of activities are there available at the Rincón de la Vieja National Park?
Although the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano is the park’s main attraction, hence the park’s name, tourists come for every kind of activities. People come into the park to have picnics, ride bikes, swim, hike, etc.
One of the other attractions aside from the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano is La Cangreja Waterfalls. This beautiful waterfalls drop 50 meters from a cliff into a small lagoon, a great spot for a swim.
How do you get to La Cangreja Waterfalls at the Rincón de la Vieja?
The Rincón de la Vieja hike to la Cangreja Waterfalls take about 4 hours and is 5.1 kilometers in each direction. The trail could be divided into three phases:
- First, you go through lush rainforest crossing a couple of creeks under the trees shadows.
- Then, you get to an open savannah with an incredible sight. However the sun can be rough in this part of the trail, so it is best to stay hydrated.
- Finally, you start to go a bit downwards into a small forest. As you get closer and closer you can hear the sound of the waterfall, until you finally reach them falling into a beautiful lagoon.
Are there any other sights worth seeing in this park?
Another incredible Rincón de la Vieja hiking trails is Las Pailas trail. This is the most accessible trail in the park and loops for about 3 kilometers through dense rainforest and rocky canyons.
This trail’s main attractions are the volcanic indicators. Along this amazing hike you will encounter a magical fumarolic lagoon, fumaroles and mud and water pots that constantly emit sulfurous steam. Some of these amazing sights are well hidden inside dense forest.
