Everything You Need to Know before Visiting the Rincón de la Vieja

Everyone who comes to the Guanacaste Province eventually visits the Rincón de la Vieja National Park. This is no coincidence at all since it is one of the most unique and renowned national parks in Costa Rica.

This important national park encompasses the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano and the Santa María Volcano, as well as the dormant Cerro Von Seebach. The park is part of the Area de Conservación Guanacaste World Heritage Site.

The Rincón de la Vieja is home to a diversity of tropical dry forests, rainforests, cloud forests, and marine habitats. The park is also home to high biodiversity and contains about 2/3 of Costa Rica’s endangered animals.

When is the Rincón de la Vieja National Park open?

The park is divided into the Santa María and Pailas sectors, Las Pailas is the most popular one. The Rincón de la Vieja hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 8 AM to 4PM. However, the Santa María sector is open every day.

How much is the entrance fee?

The Rincón de la Vieja National Park entrance fee is $15 for adult foreigners and $5 for children from ages 6 to 12. If you are going to Las Pailas sector, you will have to pay an extra 700 colones per person fee to enter the Hacienda Guachipelín property.

Where is the Rincón de la Vieja located?

The park is located only about 26 kilometers away from the Liberia, Costa Rica airport. This makes the park very easily accessible for tourists looking to enjoy a Costa Rica volcano tour.

What are the Rincón de la Vieja main attractions?

The park’s main attraction is, of course, the namesake Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. Nevertheless, there are many other important attractions in the park.

Las Pailas trail is one of these. This is one of the most accessible and popular trails in the park consisting of a 3 km loop through dense forests and canyons.

Las Pailas trail’s main attractions are the volcanic indicators found along its way. You will find a fumarolic lagoon, fumaroles and mud and water pots.

Where can I stay around the Rincón de la Vieja? There is the Borinquen Mountain resort and spa by the Santa María sector.
