The Guanacaste Province’s Rincón de la Vieja National Park is by far one of the most renowned of Costa Rica’s nature reserves. This is not without reason. This national park features the mighty Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, as well as several as being home to an incredible variety of flora and fauna.
The Rincón de la Vieja Volcano is the most famous of Costa Rica’s active volcanoes. You can even get to see its volcanic activity from atop the Rincón de la Vieja crater, which takes its name from this volcanic massif composed of 9 craters.
How do I get to the National Park?
The Rincón de la Vieja National Park is located not very far from Liberia city, the Guanacaste Province’s capital. In fact, it is only about an hour away from the Liberia, Costa Rica airport.
If this is your first time visiting the country, we highly recommend you book a private Rincón shuttle. The roads are not in very good conditions and public Costa Rica transportation services tend to be unreliable.
Once inside the park, how do I get to the Rincón de la Vieja crater?
If you actually want to witness this impressive volcano’s activity, this is the place you want to visit. In order to get there, you need to follow the Active Crater Trail.
The Active Crater Trail is about 8 km long and ends at the summit, where you can see the steaming lower crater. The round trip is 16 km long as is the most difficult route in the Rincón de la Vieja National Park due to the ascent.
This incredible route takes from 6 to 8 hours for the round trip, but it really is worth the effort. As you ascend you will experience a variety of tropical forests, including dwarf, cloud and montane ecosystems.
Discover several incredible flora and fauna species that find a home in this amazing park. You will find kinkajous, pumas, tapirs, a variety of monkeys and even jaguars. You will also get to see guaria morada orchids and laurel and Guanacaste trees.
What is the best place to take a dip around the Rincón de la Vieja National Park?
A great place to swim inside the Rincón de la Vieja National Park is in the La Cangreja Waterfall. This amazing waterfall drop 50m from a cliff into a beautiful swimmable lagoon. The La Cangreja Waterfall trail is 10 km long for the round trip, but the lagoon certainly is worth the trip.
